Mother’s Day: How Merry Maids Supports Mums
Beccy Pope from Merry Maids North Sussex reflects on being a mum at Merry Maids.
It’s Mother’s Day this week!
It’s an important time to celebrate mums everywhere, and all they do, big and small.
Here at Merry Maids, we’ve got a lot to celebrate.
Our businesses nationwide are filled with amazing women and exceptional cleaners, who balance providing our premium services with being a mum.
We sat down with Beccy Pope, the owner of Merry Maids North Sussex, to discuss how she’s balancing being a mum of two and a business owner, and how Merry Maids supports mums in the local community, be they staff or customers.
Balancing being a mum and business owner
Beccy says that being a business owner has allowed her not to miss things that are important to her two little ones.
“I can schedule my days and weeks to work around them and their social calendars (which are typically busier than mine!) It often means I have to pick up on admin tasks of an evening to stay on top of things, but I’ve also ensured I am backed up by Alex and Kathy.”
“Alex is kept busy by her own two littles and Kathy is my work mum! Between the three of us, we run a tight, crazy ship and always get to be there for school pick-ups, nativities and so on!”
Transferable skills
She says that being a mum has taught her some valuable skills that have helped her as a business owner, primarily, patience and resilience.
“Being a mum has taught me to be patient with myself most of all. Children require patience, but it’s much harder to be patient with yourself. I am more comfortable now delegating, asking for help and prioritising things.”
“I’m also more resilient,” she adds.
“Being told, ‘You’re the worst!’ because you’ve asked your child to brush their teeth makes it a bit easier to move on from something that has stressed me out or is worrying me. It also makes me more mindful of the needs of others and make sure these are looked after when booking a regular cleaning or offering a job.”
Supporting Mums on Staff
Beccy’s business operation is also devised around supporting the mums who work within the business, particularly around accommodating flexibility in their hours.
“Our working day is designed to work around the school run. Maids are asked to arrive between 08:45 and 09:10 to start their day and are finished by 14:30. We also close over the Christmas break and are happy to negotiate reduced days over school holidays, we are also closed over the weekend and Bank Holidays. We offer full-time and part-time work,” she says.
Supporting Mums who need cleaning services
At Merry Maids, our flexible, bespoke, expert and professional cleaning services can be a big help to working or busy mums who need time to focus on something other than cleaning.
Beccy recognises that this is an important part of the work we do and puts a lot of work into ensuring her services support them as much as possible.
“We have lots of parents in our customer base. Many of them are starting their families having been customers for a while. We have changed cleaning setups around, offered ad hoc cleaning and paused cleans for them as they find their way. It’s nice to support them at such a special part of their lives.”
She ends:
“I’d like to end with a shout-out to my wonderful Mum and mother-in-law who have offered unwavering support to my husband, kids and me since my eldest arrived nearly 8 years ago! (And before that too, obviously!)”
