International Women’s Day: Nicky Morris from Merry Maids Fylde, Blackpool and Preston
This International Women’s Day, Merry Maids Fylde, Blackpool and Preston’s Nicky Morris shares how she navigates being a woman in business as a Merry Maids owner.
Merry Maids Fylde, Blackpool and Preston owner Nicky Morris has owned her Merry Maids business for twenty-two years, and is still making great strides towards bigger and better things.
To celebrate International Women’s Day, we sat down with her to see what her journey in business has been and what her advice is for other female entrepreneurs.
Why Nicky joined Merry Maids
Nicky says she joined Merry Maids because home cleaning was a service she could relate to, as she knew she, and her friends and family, found it difficult to find reliable quality home cleaning.
“I also believed that demand for home cleaning services would only grow, which it has,” she says.
She says what she enjoys the most about her role is visiting potential customers to discuss our services, maintaining her commitment to being a fair and ethical employer, and mentoring her staff to help them grow.
“I enjoy seeing staff become more confident and take on more responsibility,” she says.
Career Advice
Nicky says some of the best career advice she’s been given has come from unlikely sources, and perhaps not in the way it was intended…
“Many years ago, upon leaving school after my A-Levels, I was deciding between a bank management training programme and a retail one. Someone suggested to me that banking was for men and I would be better going into retail.”
“I decided on the banking route!”
Nicky’s advice for women looking to grow their own business is certainly a lot more helpful.
“Have belief in yourself and if there is an area of running your business that you struggle with, employ the right person who knows more than you!” she says.
She adds that the one thing she wishes more people knew about being a woman in business is the difficult reality of juggling motherhood and business ownership.
Goals and Accomplishments
Having achieved much in her twenty-two years in business, Nicky says one of the accomplishments she is most proud of is achieving Great British Franchisee Status last year, a prestigious accolade in British Franchising for any business owner.
Looking to the future, Nicky says her biggest goal for her business is to prepare a legacy of success and:
“[I want] to prepare it ready for sale to a new pair of hands that can be trusted to continue to grow and develop my business and keep it going for the benefit of our lovely customers and our hardworking staff I will then be ready to retire.”
