Merry Maids Inverness Staff Member Raises £700 for Spina Bifida Charity through Sponsored Boxing Match

Raising money in the ring at Merry Maids Inverness.

Matt Cooper, a member of staff from Merry Maids Inverness, has taken part in a local Ultra White Collar Boxing match to raise money for Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland (SBH Scotland), winning his match and raising over £700 in the process.

This blog post has all the details.

Matt’s Story

Matt was fundraising on behalf of his nephew, Zack, who was born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

Spina bifida is a defect in the spinal column where one or more vertebrae fail to form properly, resulting in a gap or split that can cause damage to the nervous system. Hydrocephalus affects the brain and is more common in infants. It involves the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that surrounds, protects and nourishes the brain, which is produced in small quantities daily, being unable to drain naturally and collecting in ventricles inside the brain, which causes them to swell and the surrounding tissue to stretch.

Matt attests to the fact that while Zack’s initial diagnosis was “very worrying”, it “has become a normal part of our lives, and this is in large part due to the support provided by SBH Scotland. With their help, Zack has been able to thrive while the pressure has been lifted from my sister.”

Support from SBF Scotland

SBF Scotland aims to ensure that every person with spina bifida and or hydrocephalus is empowered to lead the highest quality of life possible and live as independently as possible. At SBH Scotland, they are more than a listening ear; they offer hope beyond diagnosis through:

  • Support for parents and families
  • Healthcare Transitions
  • Mental Health Support
  • Social Groups and a Kid’s Club
  • Health Check Clinics
  • Support for Carers
  • Free and confidential financial support

Each year, SBH Scotland needs to raise over £1 million to continue to provide their dedicated support services for children, young people and adults affected by these lifelong, complex conditions, as with little statutory funding, they rely almost solely on donations from the public. Although classed as rare conditions, 1 in every 1000 pregnancies is affected in Scotland by Spina bifida and or hydrocephalus, and SBH Scotland is the only charity with a remit to support everyone affected across the nation.

Charity Boxing Match

To raise funds for SBH Scotland and help them continue to provide their invaluable support, Matt decided to participate in the Ultra White Collar Boxing event in Inverness.

Ultra White-Collar Boxing holds black-tie events in over 100 cities across the UK, wherein volunteer boxers like Matt train hard for eight weeks to step into the ring and raise money for charity.

A challenge unlike anything Matt has ever undertaken, Matt’s two months of rigorous training paid off as he won his bout and raised over £700 for SBH Scotland in the process!

If you would like to continue to support Matt, Zack, and SBH Scotland, you can do so by donating through his JustGiving Page.
