Why a Clean Home in Autumn Makes Life Easier

Autumn brings changes to our home routines. As evenings grow darker and wetter weather sets in, we tend to spend more time inside.

A clean home during this season can truly make a difference.

At Merry Maids, our expert cleaning service keeps your home clean, cosy, and season-ready, so you don’t have to spend your evenings or weekends on housework.

We Help Keep Autumn Dirt Under Control

Autumn often brings muddy shoes, wet coats, paw prints, and more dirt tracked through the front door.

These daily marks can quickly accumulate, especially in busy hallways, kitchens, and living spaces.

Our professional cleaning teams regularly maintain these frequently used areas, preventing autumn dirt from becoming a major weekend cleaning task.

You Can Come Home to a Clean Space

As days grow shorter, you’ll likely spend more time at home.

Returning to spotless floors, organised surfaces, and a clean bathroom lets you enjoy your space immediately instead of worrying about cleaning.

Our teams handle the regular chores, helping you keep your home tidy during autumn and freeing up more time for yourself.

We Give You More Time Back

Autumn weekends tend to fill up quickly as school routines resume, work becomes busier, and plans for Halloween, Bonfire Night, and Christmas start filling the calendar.

Cleaning can easily consume several hours of your remaining free time.

By letting Merry Maids handle your regular cleaning, you can use that time for other activities.

Whether it’s spending time with family, going out for the day, enjoying a peaceful afternoon, or just relaxing at home without the stress of cleaning tasks.

Regular Cleaning Helps You Stay Ahead

Maintaining a clean home is simpler when you do daily chores regularly.

Our expert cleaning service prevents dust, dirt, and clutter from accumulating between deep cleans.

Instead of waiting until a full refresh is necessary, we support ongoing upkeep week by week.

This is especially helpful as autumn approaches and the holiday season gets busy.

We Clean Around Your Home and Routine

Every home is unique. Some families have children coming and going, while others have pets, busy work schedules, or frequent visitors.

Our cleaning service can be customised to suit your home’s specific needs, so we can prioritise the areas that matter most to you.

This means you receive professional cleaning that adapts to your household’s rhythm, rather than forcing you into a fixed routine.

Why Choose Merry Maids This Autumn?

Our professional cleaning gives you more than a clean home.

With Merry Maids, you get:

  • Professional cleaning from trained and insured teams
  • A service tailored to your home
  • Regular help keeping everyday cleaning under control
  • The reassurance of the Merry Maids guarantee
  • More time away from housework
  • A clean home to enjoy as you spend more time indoors

As autumn arrives, your free time becomes precious. We would rather you spent it enjoying your home than cleaning it.

How a Clean Home Supports Better Sleep

A clean home significantly influences sleep quality. Your surroundings impact how easily you relax, how deeply you sleep, and how revitalised you feel in the morning. Calm bedrooms, clean bedding, and clutter-free spaces all help your body and mind to unwind at night.

This guide explains how a clean home supports better sleep and what small changes can make the most significant difference.

How does a clean bedroom help you sleep better?

A tidy bedroom minimises visual and mental clutter. Clutter can cause stress and distraction, making it more difficult for your brain to relax. A clean, organised space clearly signals that it is time to rest.

Keeping floors clear, surfaces tidy, and storage organised helps create a calm sleep environment. Even small tasks, such as clearing a bedside table or putting clothes away, can support better sleep.

Why does fresh bedding matter for sleep quality?

Clean bedding plays a quiet but essential role in restful sleep. Fresh sheets feel comfortable and make your bed seem calm and inviting at the end of the day. Regular washing also helps reduce dust and daily build-up that can disturb your rest.

For most households, washing bedding once a week promotes better sleep. Airing duvets and pillows during the day also helps keep them fresh, especially during the winter months.

Can dust and air quality affect sleep?

Yes. Dust and stale air can affect breathing at night, especially for people with allergies or asthma. Bedrooms tend to collect dust more quickly than other rooms, particularly when windows remain closed in colder weather.

Regular dusting, vacuuming, and brief daily ventilation help improve air quality. Even opening a window for a few minutes can make a noticeable difference.

How does a clean home reduce evening stress?

A clean home promotes better sleep by reducing background stress. When your kitchen, living room, and hallway are neat, your mind is less likely to stay active in the evening.

Simple routines such as wiping surfaces, clearing the sink, or tidying the living space help create a smoother transition from daytime activities to rest.

What cleaning habits support better sleep?

You don’t need to deep clean every day. Small, consistent habits promote better sleep without causing stress.

Helpful habits include:

  • Making the bed each morning
  • Keeping bedroom surfaces clean
  • Vacuuming bedrooms regularly
  • Washing bedding weekly
  • Using soft lighting in the evening

These steps help create a sleep-friendly home environment.

How can professional cleaning support better sleep?

Professional cleaning helps maintain consistency. A regularly cleaned home remains calmer, fresher, and easier to manage. This reduces stress and promotes better rest, especially for busy households.

Merry Maids home cleaning services help create clean, comfortable spaces that support wellbeing and better sleep. Life made possible by Merry Maids.

Why Do Professional Cleaning Services Cost What They Do?

At Merry Maids UK, we’ve received several questions recently about why professional cleaning prices can sometimes appear higher than expected. It’s a valid enquiry — and one we’re happy to answer transparently.

When you book with a professional, VAT-registered cleaning company, you are not simply paying for cleaning services. You are investing in a fully managed service that is legal, reliable, and designed to protect you, your home, and our employees.

Here’s what goes into the cost of a professional clean.

The True Cost of Running a Professional Cleaning Service

A legitimate cleaning business in the UK must cover various costs to operate safely and responsibly. These costs include:

  • Staff salaries: Paying our cleaning teams a fair, consistent wage.
  • National Insurance and pension contributions: Legal obligations for employed staff.
  • VAT (20%): Included in all prices for VAT-registered businesses.
  • Training and DBS checks: Ensuring all staff are skilled, safe, and trustworthy.
  • Travel time and fuel: Getting our teams to and from every customer’s home.
  • Professional cleaning products and equipment: Commercial-grade vacuums, cloths, and cleaning solutions bespoke for Merry Maids for a high-quality result that is environmentally and pet-friendly.
  • Servicing and replacing equipment: Regular maintenance of tools such as vacuums.
  • Insurance: Covering public liability, accidental damage, and employer’s liability.
  • Office and admin support: Managing scheduling, customer care, and day-to-day operations.
  • Technology and communication: Software, phones, and secure systems to support smooth service.
  • Premises and storage: Safe and organised spaces for cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Uniforms and PPE: Keeping our staff protected and presentable.
  • Taxes and compliance: Meeting all legal and safety requirements.
  • Alzheimer’s/Dementia-trained: Our staff have been trained by the Alzheimer’s Society to provide compassionate service that meets our customers’ specialist needs.

Every aspect of this ensures that when a Merry Maids team arrives at your home, you receive a professional, consistent, and safe cleaning experience from an entirely legitimate business.

Why Professional Cleaning Costs More Than “Cash-in-Hand” Services

While cheaper alternatives will always exist, a professional cleaning service provides a level of security and reliability that informal cleaners cannot match.

When you choose a reputable company, you also receive:

  • Reliable, consistent service you can trust
  • Full insurance cover and legal protection
  • Trained, DBS-checked, and uniformed staff
  • High-quality bespoke cleaning products that are environmentally friendly, pet-friendly and safe methods
  • Guaranteed cleaning standards and customer support

The Value of Trust and Quality

Your home is a personal space, and allowing someone in to clean it requires trust. At Merry Maids, we take that responsibility seriously. Our prices reflect not only the time spent cleaning but also the care, experience, and professionalism that we bring to every visit.

We proudly operate responsibly, treat our staff fairly, and meet the high standards our customers expect.

Thank you to all our loyal customers for supporting local, professional cleaning businesses. Your trust helps keep our teams employed, trained, and ready to provide the reliable service you deserve.

Pre-Christmas Cleaning Guide

Christmas is approaching! So, here’s our pre-Christmas cleaning guide.

Are you planning to host a Christmas party or spend Christmas Day with the entire family? If so, you might want to tidy up before the guests arrive. However, with so much to do, Christmas cleaning can feel overwhelming.

That’s why we’ve made a list (and checked it twice) of useful pre-Christmas cleaning tasks to ensure your home stays in order during this festive season.

Guest Bedroom Pre-Christmas Cleaning

If you have a spare or guest room, the temptation may be to use it for… “storage”.

However, around this time of year, make sure your spare bedroom(s) are cleaned in case of unexpected overnight guests.

Just in case a white Christmas or an extra glass of sherry makes driving home for Christmas inadvisable.

When cleaning your spare bedroom, remember to:

  • Change the sheets/bedding & duvets so they are clean and fresh for your guests. A quick tip to make them even fresher smelling is to wash them separately from any clothes
  • Vacuum and polish the guest room to ensure the room has a welcoming scent

If your guest room isn’t used that often, it may not be as welcoming as other rooms.

  • You can potentially get a few paintings or photos up in the room, maybe a houseplant or anything else you may feel is welcoming

Your guests are likely to be staying more than one night. Therefore, they’ll need space for their clothes and other belongings. So:

  • Empty the wardrobe and drawers of all your summer clothes, or the “I’ll take these to a charity shop one day” clothes. This will ensure your guest has sufficient space and will feel more at home instead of living out of their suitcase

Kitchen Pre-Christmas Cleaning

The kitchen is usually the centre of the action at Christmas.

Especially with mulled wine brewing on the stove, it feels warm and festive!

First, your oven should be clean to ensure it’s ready for the juicy turkey or tasty nut roast!

  • Buy an oven cleaning product and follow the instructions on the label, as there are lots of different products you can use
  • A clean oven will make your food taste better and won’t produce smoke that floats around the house, making it smell unpleasant.

You’ll probably have to put LOADS of food in your fridge and freezer, so it’s time for a clear-out.

A clean, less cluttered fridge will allow space for all the pigs in blankets, wine, and pudding!

  • Have a clean fridge for all of your Christmas food
    – Remove all food, drawers and shelves
    – Soak drawers and shelves in washing-up liquid
    – Use warm water and washing-up liquid to wipe the interior
    – Wipe outer surfaces and dry inside with a kitchen roll
    – Dry and return the drawers/shelves
    – Wait until the temperature has returned to 5°C

Bathroom Pre-Christmas Cleaning

Wintertime is when people get horrid colds they can’t shake.

That’s why pre-cleaning the bathroom and maintaining cleanliness throughout your guests’ stay are vital.

  • Clean the bathroom from top to bottom, including the bath, shower, sink, toilet, carpet, cupboards and anything else you may have in there.
  • Tidy up your bathroom to leave space for your guests’ toiletries, or if you have two washrooms, move all your toiletries to the bathroom your guests won’t be using. This will again make them feel at home.

Living Room Pre-Christmas Cleaning

Your living room is the social and board gaming hub, with the fire roaring in the background and the smell of Christmas all around. Lovely!

  • Vacuum your living room carpet before your guests arrive and during their stay, depending on how long they’re there for
  • Vacuum all of your upholstery and cushions before guests arrive
  • Have a general tidy-up and, if you have time, a bit of a declutter of things you don’t need during the winter period

Home Exterior Pre-Christmas Cleaning

Ensure the outside of your house looks welcoming to your guests and any neighbours who might pop by to wish you a Merry Christmas.

  • Clean your outside decorations just by wiping them with a dry cloth
  • Clean your windows on the inside and outside
  • Ensure that, if you have a drive, you’ve left enough space for your guest’s car (s) or, if it’s on-street parking, there is enough space for them. If necessary, remember to sort out their on-street parking permits.

A bit much?

All this cleaning might seem like a bit much, especially with all the extra Christmas prep.

We provide all the services listed above and more, so you can focus on what matters at Christmas without worrying about cleaning.

If you would like to learn more about our services and how we can help you, find your nearest Merry Maids business to book a clean or call 0800 021 3072 today.

How Merry Maids of Croydon Supports Customers Living with a Cancer Diagnosis

Merry Maids business owner Debbie Walker shares how her business supports members of the local community with cancer through compassionate cleaning services.

At Merry Maids, we know that cleaning gets personal. Inviting us into your home is a big deal, no matter what, as it also means providing a window into your life.

So, for many of our customers, especially those whom we see regularly, we’re there through the good and the bad times.

In this blog post, Debbie Walker from Merry Maids of Croydon shares how they provide support for customers across their community living with a cancer diagnosis in the family and in the home through compassionate cleaning services.

Cleaning in Hospital Flats

For many years, the team have been cleaning for a local hospital, who offer charity flats for children and young people with cancer for families to stay with them at the hospital or during treatments. Our teams have been working hard for a number of years to clean between residents and visitors to ensure these spaces are kept clean and hygienic for patients and families alike.

In-home support

For the majority of our customers, the support we provide is in their own homes. Over the years, Merry Maids of Croydon has provided in-home support to customers with cancer in various ways. No situation is ever the same, and some customers may choose to book in with us for help with their cleaning after they receive their diagnosis, while in some cases, we may have been cleaning for someone for a long time, and we adapt our services to support them when they are diagnosed.

We have adapted our services to meet the specific needs of our customers by offering a tailored approach to cleaning specifications and frequency. We place particular emphasis on maintaining enhanced hygiene in high-touch and high-traffic areas, ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness and safety. Furthermore, our team offer additional protection to our customers by wearing appropriate PPE such as disposable face masks or gloves where requested.

We aim to provide our cleaning services as flexibly as possible around the timings of your appointments, so whether you want us to clean while you’re out, at the hospital or when you’re at home, we’ll work around what suits you best.

No matter your or your loved ones’ situation, one thing is consistent: the care we provide. We know that when you’re living with cancer, the last thing you want to worry about is the cleaning. We aim to alleviate that worry while continuously providing a clean and hygienic environment for you to come home to after treatments.

Housekeepers’ Appreciation Day

Last month, we celebrated Housekeepers’ Appreciation Day, giving back to our staff and giving thanks for all they do.

The team at Merry Maids Stratford upon Avon, in particular, wanted to show some appreciation to their staff for their hard work and boost their morale, especially given their consistently incredible feedback from customers.

So, they went all out, and during the entire week, they put on different things for the staff to feel appreciated, including a pastry morning where all the staff could have a pastry before work, alongside some other tasty treats.

And, on Housekeeper Appreciation Day itself, they created a pamper pack for each staff member to help them decompress and take some well-deserved self-care.

These went down a treat, with staff left feeling pampered, refreshed and well and truly appreciated.

Age appropriate chores for children

Our tips for responsible and age-appropriate chores for your little ones.

Teaching children to pitch in and help with housekeeping at a young age is vital.

After all, they have to start learning responsibility to succeed in life, but how do you know which chores young kids will be capable of handling?

If only you had an age-appropriate chore list to check…

Oh, look: our cleaning experts at Merry Maids UK have produced one just for you!

Use the following chart to assign chores for kids by age, whether a parent, grandparent, teacher or babysitter.

We also give you a few tips on how to keep your children motivated and chores fun.

Children Age 2 – 3

  • Pick up toys
  • Help set the table
  • Throw trash away when instructed
  • Place their clothes in a laundry basket
  • Wipe lower cabinet doors

Tip: Kids this age love to use their imagination, so think of ways to turn chores into fun and imaginative games.

Children Age 4 – 5

  • Put toys and books away
  • Set and clear the table
  • Pick out clothes for the next day
  • Sweep small areas with a handheld broom
  • Fold towels

Tip: Children aged four to five can get overwhelmed with too many instructions.

Ensure you assign one task at a time. To de-stress, consider singing silly songs as you work.

Tip: With a tiled kitchen, you can use a bit of masking tape to make a square, then get your child to sweep everything into this small square.

Children Age 6 – 7

  • Put away clean silverware
  • Help clean the bedroom
  • Wipe down bathroom surfaces
  • Unload the dishwasher
  • Load and unload the washing machine and tumble dryer

Tip: Give six and seven-year-olds plenty of recognition for how well they are doing as their confidence develops around this time.

You can make chores more enjoyable by turning them into games.

Children Age 8 – 9

  • Help prepare meals with supervision
  • Dust and vacuum
  • Feed, brush and walk pets
  • Empty trash cans
  • Fold towels and put clothes away

Tip: Consider buying kids this age their own brightly coloured, child-friendly kitchen utensils and get them to wash these up after every meal.

This will ramp up the fun factor and make them feel more independent.

Children Age 10 – 12

  • Laundry and ironing
  • Gardening jobs
  • Cook simple meals
  • Wash dishes by hand or load the dishwasher
  • Clean the kitchen

Tip: Start incentivising kids at this age.

Devise a routine list of chores for kids by age and reward them with weekly pocket money, extra screen time, and a trip to get ice cream or see a movie.

Children Age 13 and up

  • Make full meals
  • Clean the shower, tub, sink, and toilet
  • Clean out the refrigerator
  • Babysit for younger siblings

Tip: Rewards and incentives still work well.

Ensure you continue to recognise the additional responsibilities your children can take on so they know their help is appreciated.

There may be a little trial and error involved with different age groups.

Every child’s development is different, so give kids a new task if they have difficulty completing the original assignment.

Remember, when dealing with children and chores, there is no such thing as too much praise.

Let kids know you’re proud of their efforts.

It will make them feel good, and they’ll want to keep helping to get more positive feedback.

How to speak to children about dementia

How can you have discussions about dementia with young children?

As the school summer holidays begin, many families are spending more time together, which can bring both joy and challenges. When a close family member or friend develops dementia, children and young people may need time to adjust to the news and understand.

Alongside our charity of the year, Alzheimer’s Society, we’re working hard to support people living with dementia across the UK through specialist cleaning services informed by the latest research and a compassionate, expert approach to our work.

There’s no one ‘right thing’ to say to a child to explain dementia and all that comes with it; different children and young people will be reassured and helped by distinctive things.

In this blog post, we’re sharing the top tips advocated by Alzheimer’s Society that may help you speak to a child about dementia.

Explain the changes in behaviour

Perhaps there’s something new that the person with dementia has begun to do. This could include becoming confused about who people are or where they are.

They might feel anxious or frustrated when this happens. That could also affect their behaviour. For example, they might ask repeated questions or become agitated. These changes can be particularly confusing and upsetting for children and young people, so it’s important to talk to children about how dementia is causing these changes in behaviour.

Children might think they’ve done something wrong to cause the changes. Make sure they know they’re not at fault and encourage them to share their thoughts, feelings and questions with you. They might feel embarrassed about some of the things she does. Or they might feel bored or annoyed by repeated questions. Reassure them that it’s OK to feel sad, confused or frustrated.

E.g. ‘Grandma’s illness is making it harder for her to do some things. She might seem different or confused.’

Reassure them about changing relationships

The person with dementia may not be able to do the same things they used to.

Children could feel a mix of loss, anxiety and other emotions as they adjust to this. They might also worry about future changes.

Reassure them that the loved one still loves them and focus on what they can do with them. Emphasise the importance of spending time with the person so they can show them they care. By doing things with the person and talking with them, children are helping to support them.

Answer their questions honestly, using language they’ll understand. Don’t be afraid to use humour if it feels appropriate. Laughing together can help sometimes.

E.g. ‘Even if Grandad doesn’t always remember us, or if he says unkind things sometimes, he still loves us very much.’

Helping to manage emotions

While different children may respond differently to different reassurances, here are a few helpful statements to help explain how they or the person with dementia may be feeling:

  • Be honest but gentle: ‘It’s normal to feel sad or upset about the changes in Grandma.’
  • Provide support: ‘It’s OK to feel sad, angry or confused. I’m here to help you through it.’
  • Encourage questions: ‘If you have any questions or feel worried, you can always talk to me.’
  • Highlight the positive: ‘We can still enjoy today and make happy memories with Grandma.’

For particularly young children, using stories may also help them to understand the feelings and information surrounding dementia.

There are several books recognised by Alzheimer’s Society that aim to increase understanding of dementia in younger children.

Merry Maids Fylde, Blackpool and Preston Recognised as Forget Me Knot Champion for 2024

Nicky Morris and her team have been recognised as Merry Maids’ Forget Me Knot Challenge Champions for 2024.

Merry Maids Fylde, Blackpool and Preston have been awarded the title of Forget Me Knot Challenge Champion for 2024, for their exceptional contributions to our fundraising efforts over the last year for our charity of the year, Alzheimer’s Society.

This blog post has all of the details.

Merry Maids Forget Me Knot Challenge

The Forget Me Knot Challenge is an annual initiative started by Merry Maids in 2023 to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society.

Our staff nationwide regularly clean for members of the public living with dementia and have been long-time supporters of Dementia Friends, which helps people become more aware of ways to support those living with dementia.

As we noticed we were encountering an increasing number of people living with dementia, whether themselves or caring for a loved one, we devised The Forget Me Knot Challenge to provide more ways to help by supporting Alzheimer’s Society and its mission.

The sponsored virtual relay tracks the distance covered by our business owners and staff as they walk, run, cycle or swim to travel the equivalent distance between each Merry Maids business nationwide.

Since then, we’ve raised a significant amount of money for Alzheimer’s Society, including £10,000 in the last year, all of which goes toward helping them provide help and hope to the over 800,000 people living with dementia in the UK.

Not to mention, over the last year, every Merry Maids cleaner across the UK has also attended exclusive dementia information sessions run by Alzheimer’s Society to recognise and bolster their knowledge of dementia, helping position them to provide informed care to the people we serve.

Forget Me Knot Challenge Champion

Each year, we recognise a Forget Me Knot Challenge Champion, who has gone above and beyond in their fundraising efforts. As the second-ever Forget Me Knot Challenge Champion, succeeding Mike Fargher from Merry Maids Sheffield, Nicky and the team at Merry Maids Fylde, Blackpool and Preston were celebrated for their impressive donations, group activities, and vocal advocacy of the initiative across their social media platforms.

The team collected their award at the annual ServiceMaster Thrive in 2025 gala and has taken it back to the office to sit in pride of place in their trophy cabinet as a reminder and motivator for this year’s challenge, which is already underway.

Merry Maids Stafford Manager raises over £400 for Alzheimer’s Society through charity boxing event

Ashley Weston from Merry Maids Stafford has raised over £400 for Alzheimer’s Society through a charity white collar boxing match.

There are many ways to raise money for charity. And though it may seem unorthodox to do so by stepping into the boxing ring, Ashley Weston from Merry Maids Stafford, Dudley, and Wolverhampton has joined Merry Maids Inverness’  Matt Cooper in taking part in one of Ultra White Collar Boxing’s charity boxing events.

These black-tie events are held in over a hundred cities across the UK, where volunteers like Ashley train for eight weeks to step into the ring and raise money for charity.

Ashley’s efforts contribute to fundraising for our charity of the year, Alzheimer’s Society, which we have fundraised for over the last two years through our annual Forget Me Knot challenge.

After eight weeks of training and a team evening out to cheer him on, Ashley had a great fight and raised £470 for the dementia charity, which will help them in their mission to provide help and hope for those living with dementia across the UK.

“All the donations, big or small, were so appreciated. A lot of blood, sweat and tears have gone into these eight weeks of solid training to raise money for such a great charity,” said Ashley after his match.

Siva is the owner of ServiceMaster Clean AAA, one of the largest ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services franchise operations in the UK, which covers 19 territories spanning from Inverness to Dover. Having grown from just a single territory in Guildford, which he purchased in 2017, Siva is turning his hand to home cleaning by heading up an existing Merry Maids business in Inverness.

He is joined on his new venture by his daughter Ayranna, who has been working in AAA, specialising in HR, and is now taking charge of Merry Maids.

In this blog post, we sat down with them to delve into their plans for the business and the value they will deliver to new and existing customers and staff.

Meet Siva and Ayranna

As an astute businessman with 20 years of experience in franchising for brands like KFC and Pizza Hut before buying his ServiceMaster Clean franchise, Siva knew the success that could be achieved through investing in a successful franchise.

Initially doubling the size of his operation in just 18 months, he has also acquired 18 further territories in seven years. As a top-performing franchisee,  he is committed to exceeding client expectations and driving the business.

Ayranna recently completed a degree in Information Technology for Business, all while working as a Human Resources Manager at ServiceMaster Clean AAA, where she’s not only overseen HR responsibilities like recruitment, training, and employee relations, but also supported many other areas of the business.

“Because it’s a multi-territory franchise, I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in day-to-day operations, client management, and strategic planning. That experience gave me a strong understanding of how a service-based business runs, from both a people and performance perspective,” she says.

“This has been a huge advantage in preparing me for business ownership. As the HR Manager, I’ve developed strong people management skills, dealt with a variety of staffing challenges, and ensured compliance with employment law and best practice—all of which are crucial for running a successful team.”

Beyond HR, Ayranna has also been involved in many other aspects of the business, such as supporting operational decisions, helping with client relationships, and contributing to strategy discussions. This hands-on experience has given her a real understanding of what it takes to run and grow a business. Ayranna, having already had experience at a ServiceMaster Clean franchise, also understands the systems, values, and support structure that come with being part of the ServiceMaster brand.

“While Merry Maids is a different type of service, the core principles of delivering high-quality, reliable cleaning and managing a team are very similar,” she says.

“From contract cleaning, I’ve learned how to manage teams, handle feedback, and assist in delivering high standards—all of which can be applied to home cleaning. And stepping into a bigger role in the business is both exciting and meaningful,” she adds.

“It’s an opportunity to build something alongside my dad, who has years of experience and a strong track record in the industry. I’m grateful to be learning directly from him while also bringing in my own perspective.”

For Siva, working alongside Ayranna is also a huge achievement:

“In my view, parents enjoy their children’s success more than their own success. So, to have my daughter leading a brand for us is a proud moment for me. And she’s the right person to do that.”

Integrating in Inverness

Customers of Merry Maids Inverness will know of the business’s long history and established presence within the local area. While under new ownership, the business retains the same staff and office managers of Andrea and Kelly, who ensure the business’s smooth day-to-day operations.

Having spent time in Inverness, getting to know the business’s staff and existing structure, Siva and Ayranna have integrated themselves into the business and, galvanising the team behind them, are excited to drive it to new heights.

“It’s been a smooth and insightful process, Ayranna says.

“I’ve been learning how things operate while thinking of ideas to improve and grow the business. I’m excited to get started, learn new things, and play an active role in helping the business grow. It’s a great opportunity to take on new challenges and apply what I’ve learned so far.”

Siva, in turn, is excited to bring the same energy and growth that he has instilled across his other businesses.

“ I’m really excited because it’s a new journey for me as well. I’m in my fifties, and I have done a few of these in the past. But this is something new.  I’m really excited to go and do the same again and be successful.”

Working in the Community

For Siva, this includes working closely within the local community to support local initiatives and people to thrive.

In the past seven years at ServiceMaster Clean, Siva has worked hard to make a difference and give back to the communities he serves, whether through multiple fundraising initiatives, providing cleaning and sponsorship for the local YMCA in Guildford to allow them to provide stable dwellings for homeless people in the area, or working with a local charity to help vulnerable children learn about the dangers of drugs and knife crime.

The business already has big plans to contribute to Merry Maids and ServiceMaster Clean’s charity of the year, Alzheimer’s Society, by participating in this year’s Forget Me Knot Challenge, which has, over the last two years, raised over £14,000 for Alzheimer’s Society.

“Giving back to the community is something very close to my heart. I do it passionately. And we want to start with a bang as the Forget Me Knot challenge is starting on the 7th of July, which is seven days after we take over, and we want to do 10,000 miles by ourselves, including me leading the way with 500 miles minimum myself. And I know two other members of our staff have already signed up to beat me. We have committed to big numbers, and we are passionate about it, and we will continue to show our commitment to looking after the people in need across Merry Maids, too.”

Customer Guarantee

Siva and Ayranna want to assure Merry Maids Inverness customers, new and old, of the high-quality cleaning they can expect from the business and the expertly trained staff.

“ Merry Maids is a trusted brand, has been there for long enough, and we do a very good job. We don’t let people down,” says Siva

“The cleaners are well trained, and you know what to expect each time: good quality and consistency,” Ayranna agrees.

Furthermore, not only will this expansion within the area support the local economy, but it will also provide jobs for local people through the recruitment of new staff as the business grows.

Merry Maids Brand Leader Vikki Donnachie says she is ecstatic to welcome Siva and Ayranna to the brand:

“I am very much looking forward to welcoming Siva and Ayranna to the Merry Maids network and building on their existing success within ServiceMaster, which I am certain they will do through their commitment to their community, staff and service standards.”

Merry Maids Sutton Coldfield wins Prestigious Award of Excellence

Merry Maids business awarded for excellence in business at annual conference.

The owner of Merry Maids Sutton Coldfield was recognised for their exceptional contributions to their business and brand by winning the coveted Merry Maids Award of Excellence at the ServiceMaster Thrive in 2025 conference and gala evening last week.

This blog post has all the details.

Excellence at Merry Maids Sutton Coldfield

Merry Maids Sutton Coldfield, who also won the Award of Excellence in 2023, provides expert, compassionate and professional home cleaning services across Sutton Coldfield and the surrounding areas. It is owned and operated by Becky Hewitt, who, until 2024, co-owned the business alongside her best friend and business partner, Helen Bielby, the daughter of the original owner.

With Helen stepping back from the business at the end of 2024, Merry Maids Sutton Coldfield has been left solely in Becky’s hands, and this award exemplifies not only the successes the duo achieved during Helen’s final year but also the strides Becky has made in taking the business under her sole ownership.

The Award of Excellence has been awarded to Becky and the team at Sutton Coldfield for their dedication to embracing all the systems and solutions prescribed as part of the Merry Maids brand model, and the support that’s been offered to them by the central support team.

They have also been a great advocate and champion of the brand’s latest evolutions, such as our online shop and the mobile app, which allow for both our customers and staff to have a more straightforward, streamlined and better experience with every Merry Maids cleaning.

When collecting the award on Becky’s behalf, due to her prior commitments, at the gala, Merry Maids Brand Leader, Vikki Donnachie, said:

“I’m thoroughly delighted to present this award to Becky and Helen in Sutton Coldfield for the second year running. They are truly deserving of this award as not only have they had consistent growth year on year, they utilise all our proven tech systems and are pioneers within the network choosing to continue to support not only the brand as a whole but also their peers with new marketing ideas and are always willing to give new initiatives a good go. I am very much looking forward to continuing the journey with Becky as she took over the business in its entirety this year – the best is yet to come!”

Merry Maids Marketing Manager, Aaliah Chik, adds:

“Merry Maids Sutton Coldfield are truly deserving of the Award of Excellence. They have embraced all the systems and solutions here at Merry Maids and seen some great success off the back of it. We can’t wait to continue to see them grow in all areas of their business and encourage others to follow in their footsteps.”

Why hire a professional cleaner for a moving-out clean?

Moving on out? Don’t let the cleaning stop you in your tracks with a moving-out clean.

Moving home is widely agreed upon to be one of life’s most stressful experiences.

In fact, according to Nicky Lidbetter, chief executive of charity Anxiety UK,

“Most of us like familiarity, routine and order. When you’re moving, you have none of those.”

So, why on Earth would you add to that stress by cleaning the whole house yourself?

Though it is a further expense, there are several benefits to hiring a professional home cleaning service for a moving-out cleaning – which our experts have put together in this handy blog post.

  1. Saving you time and energy

Hiring a professional for a moving-out clean saves you time and energy better spent on the other strenuous tasks required to move home.

Let’s face it, when moving, you’re being pulled in multiple directions, and you have a million jobs to do; the last thing you want is to clean the house from top to bottom.

Especially when moving has been linked to high levels of stress and fatigue that can often lead to sleep deprivation.

Your body could likely do with a break.

Whether giving you time to focus on other jobs or to take the strain off, the time you save with a professional cleaner is the time you get back!

It leaves you one less thing to worry about, relieving some of the heavy mental burdens we carry when moving home.

  1. Bespoke cleaning

Professional cleaners like Merry Maids UK have the tools, insurance, expertise and skills to deliver a premium service with every moving-out clean.

So, you know you’re in safe hands.

We account for your needs and priorities for the property and work to that in the time that suits you best.

Whatever time is available to you, we can support you with whatever helps you the most.

Even if that means working around moving companies, we’re used to working with third parties on moving days.

Be it the whole house, or specific rooms that you want to ensure are sparkling or to top up cleaning you’ve already done yourself.

Whether it’s a full spring clean well ahead of the move or a quick top and tail on the day, we will be there to handle whatever you need at a time that suits you.

So, if you’ve packed your vacuum and cleaning supplies in a box to be moved, we’ll be there on your moving day with our bespoke products and equipment to ensure you leave your home sparkling clean.

Often operating in teams and trained in efficiency while maintaining the best results, a professional cleaner is also likely to cultivate a higher standard of cleaning in a shorter time than can be achieved on your own.

  1. A proper send-off

For many of us, a home is something to take pride in – and that doesn’t change just because you’ve moved.

As Debbie Walker from Merry Maids of Croydon can attest.

She says for her customers who have benefitted from moving cleaning, it helps them leave their home – which they have poured so much love and care into over the years – in a state that feels appropriate and (dare we say) respectful.

Which is why her team call them “courtesy cleans”.

With a professional cleaner, you’re working alongside people you can trust to deliver reliable service when you need it most.

It’s also an emotional time particularly, given the attachment we may have to a property.,

After all, home is where the heart is.

In that sense, a professional moving-out cleaning may be your way of caring for the home you love and giving it a proper send-off.

Need a professional moving out clean?

Whether for emotional, practical or well-being purposes, there are many reasons to hire a professional cleaner before your move.

If you’re moving home and would benefit from the support of professionals with over 40 years of experience delivering premium home cleaning across the UK, find your nearest Merry Maids business or book online today.

Is it wrong to clean before your cleaner arrives?

What is the appropriate etiquette for cleaning before your cleaner arrives? Our experts weigh in.

In our experience, there can be a lot of tentativeness around the proper etiquette when it comes to getting a home cleaner.

Particularly when it comes to the question of whether or not you need to tidy your home before the cleaner arrives.

It’s tricky, as it seems counterintuitive, but there are many reasons people often cite as to why they want to clean before our experts have even set foot in the home.

Informed by over 20 years of experience as a Merry Maids business owner in Croydon, in this blog post, Debbie Walker answers frequently asked questions about cleaning for your cleaner.

Is it wrong to clean before your cleaner arrives?

“At Merry Maids of Croydon, we are here to help you with whatever you need,” says Debbie.

It is definitely not wrong to clean your home before a professional cleaner arrives. However, we are here to help you, and we don’t want you to spend precious time or energy doing the tasks that we are very happy to do for you.

Many people have that psychological feeling of guilt that they are asking someone to help them. We always say, “Please don’t worry. You are helping us by letting us help you.”

It’s what we do, and it’s helping keep our staff busy and employed. So please don’t do too much the day or night before a clean.

What will a professional cleaner typically do and not do to clean a home?

Services carried out by a professional cleaner will vary depending on the provider. But there will always, naturally, be some overlap. At Merry Maids…

We do:

On every visit, a Merry Maids team will dust, wash, sanitise and vacuum your home using our own equipment and specially formulated products. Our services depend on the type of cleaning you require, as some customers may book for a one-off service and some we see regularly.

Regular cleans are frequent visits, typically weekly, fortnightly or 4-weekly. They involve:

  • Dusting – ornaments, electrical goods, furniture, skirting boards.
  • Vacuuming – carpets and soft furnishings.
  • Emptying wastebaskets and ashtrays.
  • Bathrooms – suites, tiles, mirrors, and deodorising.
  • Kitchens – surfaces, cupboards (exterior), white goods (exterior).

One-offs, which can be spring cleans or deep cleans, end-of-tenancies or builders cleans, are ideal when moving in or out of a property, preparing your home to sell, having the in-laws visiting, in the aftermath of building or renovation works or needing a complete freshen-up. Above and beyond the services included in a regular cleaning, they can also include:

  • Cleaning out kitchen cupboards.
  • Vacuuming curtains.
  • Cleaning brass and silver.
  • Washing walls.
  • Cleaning inside windows.
  • Cleaning inside and/or defrosting fridges and freezers.

We don’t:

As a rule of thumb, we don’t typically:

  • Deal with bodily fluids (human or animal) from a health and safety point of view.
  • Clean external windows.
  • Clean anything that could affect the health and safety of the staff, e.g. cleaning a very high window that cannot be reached.

Things to do before a cleaner arrives

Before arriving at your home, we recommend that you pick things up off the floors, which can be difficult, we know, with young children. But this allows us to move around the home efficiently and safely. We’ll also do an initial risk assessment to cover these areas, so we know what to expect from your home and can clean safely.

How can someone feel less embarrassed before a professional cleaner arrives?

Part of feeling less embarrassed is having a good working relationship and communication with your professional cleaning company,” says Debbie.

“At Merry Maids of Croydon, we take the time to get to know you and your circumstances. By sharing with us your concerns, we can help alleviate them. We understand that for many reasons, from mental and physical health, work pressures or family circumstances, the tidiness or cleanliness of your home can be affected. Ideally, before we clean, we offer a free, no-obligation quotation to visit you in your home, allowing us to get to know you and understand how we can help you.”

Our staff recruitment is vital in helping you feel more comfortable. Our cleaners need to be understanding and non-judgmental, and have great communication skills to put you at ease. By only employing cleaners with these skills and who meet these standards, we help you, as our customers, by providing compassionate, understanding staff to do the best possible job while putting you at ease.

To support this, we offer regularity by cleaning teams so that it’s possible to build up a good relationship, so if things are not as you would want them to be when the cleaning arrives, you are not embarrassed to tell us that you had a really bad night’s sleep, for example.

Considering getting a cleaner?

If you have any more questions about the ins and outs or etiquette of hiring a professional cleaning service in your home, our experts nationwide, like Debbie, are happy to field any questions and concerns you may have.

To find out more about how we can help you with a range of professional and expert cleaning services, find your nearest Merry Maids business, book online, or call 0800 021 3072 today.

Spring Allergies: 5 Tips to keep your home pollen-free

Reduce allergens in your home with these top tips from Merry Maids UK.

Spring is here, the sun is shining, and you’re sneezing. Not ideal. Eyes burning, nose streaming, sniffling galore, that’s not how you want to bring in the spring.

Unfortunately, pollen and other allergens start to impact the estimated 16 million hay fever sufferers in the UK.

Thankfully, there are ways you can combat your hay fever and allergies. In this blog post, the cleaning experts at Merry Maids UK share our top tips to keep your home pollen-free.

Types of Pollen

Hay fever isn’t the same for everyone. Varying types of pollen from different sources like trees, grass and weeds will affect hay fever sufferers at different times throughout the year. This handy guide from Zehnder Group details the average pollen season in Europe and when the most common types are prevalent.

So, how do you prevent them from affecting you?

  1. Manage Ventilation

Managing the ventilation in your home is one of the best ways to reduce pollen. This is easier said than done in the warmer months in the UK, but try only opening windows when pollen levels are lower early in the morning or late at night.

You could also use a dehumidifier to reduce the mould spores in your home that could cause allergic reactions and improve your home’s air quality.

  1. Control Levels of Pet Dander

Bathe your pets regularly to lessen the amount of loose dander in your home. Combine this with regular vacuuming to stay on top of this potential allergen. If you can say no to their little face, you may also want to keep them out of the bedroom during allergy season.

  1. Stay on top of mould

Stay on top of potential mould spores, which can worsen and cause allergic reactions, by wiping down the fridge, removing out-of-date food, and cleaning the shower regularly, especially if you’re showering more frequently to remove pollen from your body.

If you need serious mould removal services, contact a disaster restoration expert like ServiceMaster Restore.

  1. Vacuum and change bedding regularly

Remove allergens in the home by vacuuming regularly and changing your bedding more often to stop pollen and other allergens from sitting around and collecting in your living space.

  1. Have your home professionally cleaned

Receiving a regular, comprehensive and professional cleaning of your home during allergy season can help you stay on top of the chores and keep you in good health. Not only will you have the aesthetic, temporal boost and the satisfaction of having a clean home, but your living space will be kept allergen-free.

Merry Maids Leicester Branch Manager Trained in Mental Health First Aid

Rachel Mullaney from Merry Maids Leicester has been trained in Mental Health First Aid to help look after her team of expert cleaners.

Mental Health is a hot-button topic these days.

We all have mental health. And better mental health is better for everyone.

Real service starts with real people — and looking after each other is just as important as looking after our customers.

That’s why Rachel Mullaney, Branch Manager of Merry Maids Leicester has joined ServiceMaster Ltd staff in being trained in Mental Health First Aid.

Whether it’s supporting a colleague through a tough day or recognising when someone might need a listening ear, as a Mental Health First Aider, Rachel is here to help create a more caring, understanding workplace.

What the training means

MHFA England® is a social enterprise with a vision to improve the mental health of the nation.

Their expert guidance and training give people like Rachel the skills to spot the signs of poor mental health, the confidence to start a conversation, and the knowledge to signpost to support.

As a certified Mental Health First Aider, Rachel now has the skills and knowledge to provide support to people in her teams who may be experiencing poor mental health.

How was the experience for Rachel?

Rachel says the training has been incredibly valuable for her.

“Completing the Mental Health First Aider training for me has been an invaluable experience for both my personal growth and my ability to support my team and colleagues. Mental Health is such a big part of society, and I found that the course provided a lot of insights into mental health issues which helped me understand the signs and symptoms of various conditions as well as effective strategies for providing support in and out of the workplace.”

“One of the most significant lessons was learning how to approach conversations about mental health in a compassionate and non-judgmental manner. I now feel more equipped to create a safe environment for my colleagues and I feel able to encourage open discussions about mental well-being without any stigma. This training has empowered me to help identify colleagues who may be struggling and offer appropriate support, whether it’s through just simply listening, guiding them to the relevant resources or being a reliable point of contact that people can approach and confide in. Why should I get my home professionally spring-cleaned?

The benefits of a professional spring-cleaning service.

We don’t know about you, but we’re ready for spring.

It’s when nature washes away the cold of winter and freshens up for a brighter year ahead.

The flowers start to bloom, and the temperatures begin to rise. What’s not to love?

Preparing for spring also means it’s time to start thinking about your spring cleaning.

It may not always be pleasant, but the practice of getting down and dirty to clear out the clutter and the cobwebs of the past year is a vital part of the springtime.

Though the adage often cited is ‘if you want a job done properly, do it yourself,’ we’re here to tell you there is another way.

In this blog post, our cleaning experts walk you through the benefits of hiring a professional cleaning service for your spring cleaning.

What’s involved in spring cleaning?

Spring cleans are a deeper and more comprehensive cleaning than a regular maintenance clean and are all about clearing out the house at a deeper level to prepare for the year ahead.

Regular cleaning keeps your home in top condition, while deep cleaning gives that extra oomph and sparkle to make your home truly SHINE.

Our expert deep and spring cleans are ideal when moving in or out of a property, preparing your home to sell, having the in-laws visiting, in the aftermath of building or renovation works or needing a complete freshen-up.

They can include:
  • Cleaning out kitchen cupboards
  • Vacuuming curtains
  • Cleaning inside windows
  • Cleaning inside and or defrosting fridges and freezers
  • Washing internal doors and window frames
  • Moving heavier furniture to clean behind (where possible)

How do the professionals spring clean your home?

Professional cleaning services like those at Merry Maids use experienced professionals trained to deliver excellent-value home cleaning with a tried and tested methodology and products to produce the best results.

On every visit, your Merry Maids team will dust, wash, sanitise and vacuum your home using our equipment and specially formulated products.

We operate a strict cleaning process that utilises coloured cloths for different areas of the home to avoid cross-contamination.

All our maids are trained in Health and Safety regulations and procedures* to use our products and equipment

*Practices may vary by area due to area-specific considerations.

How much does it cost to have my home professionally cleaned?

There is no standard pricing index used to determine domestic cleaning service fees.

Some businesses charge by the hour, while others will charge for the scope of the cleaning involved.

Either way, professional cleaning services will determine their prices based on the following factors:

  1. Size
  2. Layout and number of rooms
  3. Style of home
  4. Number of residents
  5. Factoring of children and pets
  6. Frequency of cleaning
  7. Location and travel distance from business location

To see the value of professional spring-cleaning services in your area, contact your nearest Merry Maids business for a free, no-obligation quotation.

Why pay when you can do it yourself, you ask.

We’ll tell you…

  1. Professional spring cleaning saves you time and effort

There’s no doubt about it… spring cleaning is a massive undertaking.

Especially if you’re already juggling family and childcare responsibilities, work, and the basics like socialisation and a good amount of rest.

Whatever your idea is of time well spent, we know it doesn’t involve doing the cleaning.

Entrusting your spring cleaning to professionals can save you hours of effort and give you time to focus on what matters most.

  1. The bespoke and professional touch

At Merry Maids, we love to clean. It’s what we do.

Over our 30 years of delivering home cleaning expertise, we have refined the experience had by our customers to a fine art.

We know that each home and each individual we clean for is unique.

So, we go above and beyond to ensure you get the clean you deserve, not just the clean you expect, and work with you to understand the specific needs of you and your home and work tirelessly to ensure that you’re more than happy with gleaming results – at a time that suits you.

Professional cleaning staff like ours are trained with the latest (and often exclusive) products, tools, and best practices to make every room in the house sparkle.

  1. Professional spring cleaning is good for your health

Aside from the obvious aesthetic benefit, a good spring cleaning is also good for your health!

According to Verywell Mind, a cluttered and dirty environment can be harmful to your mental health, as it has been scientifically linked to higher rates of stress, depression and anxiety, as well as decreased rates of focus.

In addition, studies have shown that having a clean home typically is the mark of healthier inhabitants.

Cleanliness in the home has even been found to be a better predictor of good health for the residents than the walkability of its neighbourhood!

Cleaning can also improve the air quality of your home.

This is extra vital in the spring as the winter often involves more time spent inside with less fresh air in the home – causing more dust on the property.

The equipment used by professional cleaners is designed to eliminate harmful dust in the home and can benefit your health and air quality.

  1. Professional support with additional health requirements

We know that people aren’t always able to clean for themselves.

Following our successful Forget Me Knot Challenge last year – where our businesses across the UK raised over £4000 for the Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia Friends in a matter of weeks – Merry Maids UK have this year become an official partner in aid of Alzheimer’s Society.

At Merry Maids, our staff understand the specific requirements of the over 900,000 people living with dementia in the UK and ensure their homes are clean, healthy places for them to live, maintained by friendly, local people who support them with any additional requirements that come with dementia and other conditions – even if that means being someone to make a cup of tea and have a chat with.

Why hire Merry Maids to spring clean your home?

Put the spring back in your cleaning with Merry Maids.

The springtime is for enjoying, not cleaning.

Get a cleaner, fresher home faster and reclaim your free time with the expert help of your local cleaning professionals.

Are you tired of spending your free time hunched over to clean cobwebbed corners rather than enjoying the sunshine?

Your springtime is sacred.

Booking your spring cleaning with your local professionals now could be the saving grace you’ve been waiting for.

At Merry Maids, we’ve been experts in home cleaning for over 30 years, providing professional and bespoke services as one-off, regular or deep cleans and taking the hassle out of your spring cleaning.

Naturally, you might not love cleaning, but we do. It’s what we do best!
