Home design trends for 2026

Home design trends for 2026 emphasise comfort, individuality, and well-being in your space. The focus is shifting away from cold, sparse environments toward homes that feel warm, lived-in, and distinctly “you.”

If you are considering refreshing a room or planning a larger change, here is a straightforward guide to the key home design trends for 2026 and how to implement them in your home.

Colour and texture in 2026

Cool grey is taking a back seat. Warmer neutrals are coming through instead. You will see:

  • Soft sage greens
  • Blush pinks
  • Pale blues
  • Honeyed tones like butterscotch

These shades keep rooms calm while also feeling welcoming.

Many people are becoming bolder with colour choices. Deep burgundy, plum, and other rich tones are now being used for feature walls, cosy rooms, and even entire living spaces. These shades can be applied in a dining room, reading nook, or bedroom to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Texture plays a significant role in interior design. Fabrics like velvet, mohair, and heavier woven materials have gained popularity for their ability to add depth and warmth to sofas, cushions, and curtains. Additionally, bold and interesting prints are making a comeback, allowing your textiles to convey more personality and style.

Style and function

Home design trends for 2026 are not only about looks. They also support how you live and feel.

Intelligent and adaptive spaces

Rooms are working smarter. One space might act as a home office in the day and a snug in the evening. Flexible furniture, clever storage, and simple tech help you change a room’s feel without much effort.

Wellness rooms

There is growing interest in small areas or full rooms set aside for rest and well-being. This could be:

  • A quiet corner with a yoga mat
  • A space for stretching or Pilates
  • A room with a sauna or cold plunge, if you have the space and budget

The idea is simple. Your home should support your wellbeing, not only provide a place to sleep and eat.

Embracing imperfection

Matching sets are not essential. Handmade items, antiques, and thrift store finds are all welcome. A slightly worn wooden table or a vintage lamp can add character and charm to a room. The emphasis is on pieces that tell a story rather than having everything look identical.

Statement seating

Sofas and chairs are becoming more sculptural and, at times, oversized. Seating should be comfortable while serving as a focal point in the room. Curved shapes, bold fabrics, and interesting legs or details can make seating feel special.

“Midimalism”

The term “midimalism” refers to a home design trend expected to gain popularity in 2026. It occupies a space between minimalism and maximalism. In midimalism, rooms are kept relatively simple and uncluttered, while incorporating warm colours, mid-century shapes, and natural materials. The result is a tidy space that feels relaxed rather than rigid.

Personal touches

In 2026, homes are highly personal. People desire spaces that reflect their lives and memories.

Personal gallery walls

Gallery walls are becoming more individual. Instead of matching sets of prints, you might see:

  • Family photos
  • Vintage plates
  • Small artworks
  • Travel mementos

The mix matters more than the “perfect” layout.

Custom details

Monogrammed towels, embroidered cushions, and personalised blankets are gaining interest. These small touches add texture and a sense of history. They work exceptionally well when mixed with older or inherited furniture.

What is starting to date

A few recent looks are beginning to feel less current.

  • Very stark minimalism with only white or grey, and almost no furniture
  • Heavy use of recessed spotlights as the only lighting
  • Bouclé on everything, especially large white sofas

These are being replaced by warmer colours, more varied lighting such as lamps and chandeliers, and a wider range of textures.

How cleaning supports your new look

Fresh design works best in a clean home. Warm neutrals, rich fabrics, and statement furniture stand out more in a dust-free and well-cared-for space. Clear floors, clean lighting, and tidy surfaces help each piece shine.

Home decorating tips

With the nation currently being told to stay at home, there can’t be a better time to think about a bit of home decorating!

We’ve done our homework and accumulated a few useful tips for you to take away and implement when you’re decorating your home, so here they are:

Plan your decorating

Before splashing paint all over the walls and rearranging any furniture, make sure you have a plan written down.

  • Produce a colour palette for each room
  • To your best ability draw your new layout with everything labelled, including each wall colour
  • Get everything organised like plastic sheets for while your painting and a good supply of tea and coffee

Integrating design

You’ll need to take into consideration what other rooms in your home look like, as for example, a modern room in an older house may not work particularly well.

Consider what your other rooms look like and try to use complimenting colours throughout your home, you’ll have a beautiful home in no time.

If you can’t afford to do other rooms right now, have these on a plan to do so in the future, again just to make your house more uniform.

Functional designing

We all want a home to be proud of and one which is inviting to visitors too, that’s where functional design comes in to play.

For each room ask yourself a few questions to ensure you produce the right feeling you want for that specific room;

  • How do you want the space to appear/feel (cheerful, formal, friendly)?
  • Who is the room being used by (adults, children or both)?
  • What is the room’s function (an office, a nice place to relax, kids playroom)?

As an example, if it’s your office which you’re planning to decorate, you’ll probably want to consider incorporating deeper colours, textures and patterns to make it feel more formal.

You can get some great home decorating inspiration on the website/app Houzz and of course on Pinterest.

Decorating on a budget

If this is a spur of the moment thing, which you’ve decided to do because of having to stay at home, you may not have saved up the funds to do a full home decoration.

This is where you need to consider which room/s are the ones most in need of a makeover. If it’s just a lick of paint that you’re wanting to put up, then for now, just buy the exact amount you need for the room/s and get painting, include the kids if you want!

If you’re planning on upgrading the whole room from décor to furniture then you may want to consider, where possible looking at second–hand items.

Achieve the correct balance

Making sure your room/s look as visually pleasing as possible is important, especially if it’s a small space. Things like the arrangement and size of your furniture, along with other items will help with balancing your room.

For example, if it’s a lounge that will be used for entertaining family and visitors, you’ll want to consider having a main focal point in the room. This could be a bold statement wallpaper, or maybe a modern centrepiece on the coffee table.

It’s your space

Remember it’s your house, it’s your space, and taking too many hints and ideas from websites and other people could influence you to forget about what you want. Make sure your home has yours and your family’s personality written all over it. Enjoy your home decorating! If you like you can share your skills with us on social using #MMhomedecoration!
